United Medical Reduces Healthcare Costs in Delaware

[Bear, Delaware] – United Medical Accountable Care Organization (UMACO), a Delaware Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), providing Medicare beneficiaries with access to high-quality, coordinated care across the state, is happy to announce that it achieved $7 million dollars savings for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the second consecutive year—a 7.04% savings rate. UMACO will receive over $3 million in shared savings as a result.

“United Medical’s continued high performance is a reflection of our success at establishing and implementing a co-management framework for managing our members, especially our chronic disease patients, and using incentive in our value-based care models to ensure that participating providers can continuously evolve their practices”, said Kemal Erkan, Chairman and CEO of United Medical ACO.

“Our primary focus is on changing patient behavior and working collaboratively with our entire care team, to promote higher-quality coordinated care for our members, while helping to slow health care cost growth”, said Dr Carlo Valencia, UMACO Medical Director.

Established in 2014, UMACO has been a game changer in the healthcare landscape and will continue to be a key organization to change the behavior of patients, insurance companies, government policy-makers, physicians, hospitals and health systems for the better in years to come.

“UMACO has successfully transcended the gap between clinical practice and improved health outcomes of our community as a whole by harnessing the power of available technology and partnering with our providers to redirect their focus on disease prevention and care coordination,” said Dr. Isaias Irgau, Vice-Chair of UMACO. “The basis of its success lies in its commitment to provide resources and capacity in care coordination, data collection and valuing the importance of understanding population health determinants,” Dr. Irgau added.

United Medical ACO comprises the largest network of professionals in a group practice arrangement in Delaware. It unites multiple accountable care programs under a common ACO platform, consisting of both primary care physicians and specialists, in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. This makes UMACO a true representative of Delaware’s patient population.
